can anyone advise how to delete old apps from itunes

Click on an app you no longer want to select and press delete on your keyboard. Confirm that you want it removed.

WWhen I click on the app nothing happens. Only thing I get is the option to download it in the top right hand corner.

Are you trying to hide from your purchase history rather than the apps section of the iTunes library?
When working in the purchase history with other purchased content I see an X at the top left when I hover over an item that can be used to hide it. With apps the X isn't shown, but you can click where it would be and the item is removed without any confirmation.

In which case the solution is above, place the pointer over the top left corner of an app you wish to remove, the cursor should change shape. Click to hide.
