Photos for Mac: Is there any way to add captions to photos in an album? I want to use a set of captioned photos as a record of a project. It is easy to add captions in a slideshow, but then I have to work around the auto-play and if I try to navigate the show manually, the toolbar hides my captions!
You can add captions to individual photos in the Info panel for a photo, but the captions are only visible in the Info panel.
If you type titles into the Title field in the Info panel, the titles can be displayed below the thumbnails of the photos in an album.
Just enable "Titles" in the "View" menu: View > Metadata > Titles.
Thanks, léonie. I appreciate learning how to do that. I started to write that it still doesn't get me where I want to be, but then I went back and played with the view. When the sidebar is open, the single image view shows the title across the top, with enough space for a good amount of text. Good enough for now!

BTW, you can enter the titles directly into the textfield below the thumbnails. Just hover the pointer below the thumbnail and the textfield will be revealed, with "untitled" written inside.

You might want to keep in mind for future reference that technically the title metadata tag is not the same as the caption one, the latter of which is an older alternative name for the description tag, according to the IPTC standards. (Photos, along with most other photo management apps, follows the IPTC standards.)
From the standards reference for the title tag:
Title [IPTC Core]
This field can include a shorthand reference for the image or “photograph” - primarily for identification. The title of an image should be a short, human-readable name - text and/or numeric reference - and may take several forms. For photographers, this might be the filename of their original scan or digital camera file. For news organizations it might be the name of a story it accompanies. The Title term should not be confused with the Headline term, which is a short synopsis of the photograph's content.
Note: This field is “shared” with the “Document Title” field in the Description panel of the Adobe Photoshop File Info document.
And for the description tag it says this:
Description [IPTC Core]
The Description field, often referred to as “Caption,” should report the who, what and why of what the photograph depicts. If there is a person or people in the image, this caption might include their names, and/or their roles in any action taking place. If the image depicts a location, then it should describe the location. Don’t forget to also include this same “geographical” information in the appropriate fields (location, city, state/province, country) of the IPTC Core. The amount of detail to include depends on the image and whether it is documentary or conceptual. Typically, editorial images come with complete caption text, while advertising images may not.
Note: This field is “shared” with the “Description” field in the Description panel of the Adobe Photoshop File Info dialogue.
Of course, you don't have to follow these guidelines but you may notice if you export a photo from Photos with both title & description info filled in that other apps show the description info with a different tag label. For example, Preview's info panel will show the description as a "Caption/Description" tag.
