Q: where is iPhoto? Are my pictures gone forever?

So i upgraded my macbook pro os 10.9.5 maverick to yosemite last night and now i realized that iPhoto is no longer available in the app store nor did i find it in my list of application. I am very worried because it housed over 500 irreplaceable pictures that i cherished...are they gone?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

No. OS X 10.10.3 and later have a built-in Photos app. If you don't like it, iPhoto should still be available in the "Purchases" tab of the App Store if you've previously downloaded it.

Re: Is Iphoto gone ? i want it back!

Go to the App Store and check out the Purchases List. If iPhoto is there then it will be v9.6.1

If it is there, then drag your existing iPhoto app (not the library, just the app) to the trash

Install the App from the App Store.

Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?

iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

If you don't want to use Photos for some reason, click here and try following the instructions. iPhoto is still in the Applications folder, but will need to be updated before it can be launched in Yosemite.

Regardless of whether you choose to switch to Photos, or update iPhoto for compatibility, or do both, before doing anything, choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, double-click Pictures, and put a copy of the library on an external drive which contains a volume formatted as Mac OS Extended.

I can't use/find iPhoto and cannot find it (hidden or unhidden) in the App Store purchases tab. Apparently iPhoto isn't available anymore ('Not available in the Irish store'). I have thousands of photos I can't find after an upgrade to El Capitan...HEEELLLLPPPPPPP!!!!!!

Use Photos instead. It works with your iPhoto Library.
