Music Library Search Broken

I have iTunes 12.2.1 on Mac OSX 10.10.4, so I'm up to date...

So why can't I search my (local) music library by genre? If I click in the search box and type in a genre (in this case, "Comedy"), up pops a useless extra dialog informing me I have no matches in my library. This is despite the fact that yes, I have DOZENS of items carefully tagged "Comedy" .. and they are clearly listed with "Comedy" in the genre column.

What gives? This used to work fine until that wart known as iTunes 12 shipped. Is there any way to do a nice decent honest search any more?
