No. I'm saying that every media file that is copied into one of your devices is stored with a randomized filename, tagged or not. The files are stored in folders labelled something like F00-F49, where the higher number depends on the size of the device. This is, I assume, a design feature principally designed to prevent piracy. I.e. to stop you loading your iPod/iPhone/iPad with media, then taking it around to a friend's house and downloading all of your songs to their computer. You are expected to maintain a backup of your iTunes library, and move the library to your new computer as and when you upgrade. Apple devices are not designed to be the primary store for your content. They are not designed for the easy extraction of media though this can sometimes be achieved, possibly with the assistance of third party tools.

The tagged/not tagged issue only comes into play if you fail to maintain your own backups and pull back your media from the device's memory. Tagged files contain all of the information such as artist, album, track #, genre, song name, etc. stored internally. Tracks in .wav format do not. Move a .wav file from one computer or library to another and the only information iTunes picks up is the name of the file which it uses as the track name. The same goes for other software. When iTunes stores a file you rip in .wav format the information is stored in the iTunes library, and only there. This makes .wav, or indeed any other untagged file, a poor choice for media storage as there is no redundancy. Should your library become corrupt the media files alone are not sufficient for rebuilding it.

If you still have untagged media files on a device in such a way that the device knows the missing information, name, album, artist. etc. then it is possible that a third party tool can link the media and the metadata back together in an iTunes library, although I don't know specifically of one that has this feature. More common are tools that scan the media folder and read the tags directly from the files that are tagged and copy these out into standard artist and album folders.

For more see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. In most cases the media files can be extracted using Windows Explorer or OS X finder, or a free tool that will allow access to the iOS file system. For tagged files loading these up into an iTunes library will show all of the metadata stored in the file. For untagged files the issue is linking the data in the devices library back to the recovered files. I have some experience with extracting ratings, playcounts and playlists when the media has been either copied or recovered in a way that breaks iTunes method of linking the files on the device with the files in the library. (See the three scripts listed near the end of the user tip.) Each track is normally represented internally by a unique ID rather than a collection of properties. A playlists is then an ordered list of these IDs, and during a sync iTunes compares the list of content that is on the device with that selected to sync to work out what to add or remove. ratings and playcounts are not stored in the tags but synced by means of these IDs. My scripts use the properties instead of the IDs to match the two sets of tracks with each other and copy over the relevant information. There is an outside chance that I could perform the same trick with the file sizes for .wav files.

For what it is worth I see no grounds for a complaint. Without a backup of your data you are in a situation of your own making. If I can help I will try, but I'll need some more details. Are the tracks still on a device that has the details? How many tracks are we taking about? Are the all in .wav format or are some of them untagged .mp3s?

These random four character names are how Apple stores media items on its devices. As long as the files are tagged properly if they are imported into an iTunes library all of the original metadata can be read. Files in .wav format, for example, don't have a tag, so these should be recovered using software that can read the metadata from the device at the same time as the media is recovered, or you end up with a collection of unidentifiable tracks. Fixing those will be time consuming, although come to think of it the new Apple Music might be able to recognise them and fill in some of the missing details.

hey Turing thanks for the quick reply.

im not sure if I'm getting this right. So what you're saying is that if my songs are NOT tagged right. Apple automatically changed it to some random 'four Capitol letter'?

And the only way for me to fix this is to buy some special software to sorten it out? man. Is this even legal?

i Mean all I did was transferred music from my own personal devices like my iPhone's. iPod. iPad. And computer. Why did apple changed the title of my music without my permission?? And now theres no way to fix this. How frustrating is this???

i Don't think this is legal. Id spend the last 3 days trying to get this resolve And I'm just frustrated. How can apple changed and messed up my music without my permision. And now they cannot Fix it.

can anyone help me? Or how should I take my complaint to another step?
