Q: Loss of functionality with Photos

In the excellent iPhoto program, when photos were downloaded from a camera disk, there was an automatic choice button after downloading that would enable me to delete the photos from the chip. In the horrible new Photos program, why has that option gone away. Why? Where is it? I now have to put the disk back in my camera and empty the disk from there. This is only one of the numerous examples of how terrible the new Photos program is compared to iPhoto.

Another question, is there anyway to convert the Photos program back to iPhoto?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013), OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

If you migrated your iPhoto Library to Photos the original photos and previews are only stored once. The Photos.app is using hard links to the photos in the iPhoto Library.

So you can keep both libraries, if you want to explore Photos further.

There is button in the toolbar of the import panel.
You can enable the option to delete after importing before you start importing.

Another question, is there anyway to convert the Photos program back to iPhoto?

iPhoto should still be installed, if you did not uninstall it.
You can simply ignore Photos. It is not compulsory to use it - it is just a new, additional application.
If you did not yet update to iPhoto 9.6.1, you need to update. Other iPhoto versions are not compatible with MacOS X 10.10.3 or later.

Thank you. This was helpful. It was a marvelous, positive surprise to see that iPhoto is still there.

So here is a new question. The laptop has both Photos and iPhoto.

Does that mean the photos are stored twice?

Or, are they stored once and the two programs simply show them differently?

This is important for the obvious reason of storage space.

I have an additional question.

A colleague who was using iPhoto upgraded her Mac Book Pro to Yosemite 10.10.4.

She was distressed with the new Photos program, which she does not like at all.

She knows she needs to upgrade iPhoto 9.6 to 9.6.1.

However, when she attempted the upgrade in the Mac App Store, the store says the item is not available!

Where can she get the latest iPhoto version 9.6.1?

Apple stopped selling iPhoto, so it is a bit tricky to update. You will neither find an update on the Updates page of any App Store nor can you purchase iPhoto any longer. The update message, when you try to launch iPhoto is sending you on a wild goose chase. The only way to update is by reinstalling iPhoto, if you already own iPhoto and your purchase is associated with your AppleID at the Mac App Store
Barney-15E's user tip explains how to update to iPhoto 9.6.1 by reinstalling your purchase. Get iPhoto 9.6.1 if you didn't update before OS X 10.10.3

Basically, she needs to move the incompatible iPhoto version to the Trash (don't empty the Trash), and the open the Purchases history at theMac App Store - the fourth tab "Purchases". Photos should now be showing with an "Install" button beside it.

Thanks. Please tell your folks at Apple that they need to continue to make iPhoto available. I am a semi-professional photographer and I find it much easier to use than Photos. I like the organization much better. The new Photos program is meant to be an improvement. But it's not. It's just different. And certainly not better in any single way that I can see.

Sorry we are just users exactly like you and you can tell Apple everything we can using the same form we use - https://www.apple.com/feedback/photos.html

And Apple has not taken iphoto away - it still works just fine (you do need the current version 9.6.1 so if you do not keep your system up to date see Can't Update iPhoto because it is not available in the App Store
