Q: iMac randomly restarts from sleep

iMac 27-inch, Late 2012

processor: 3.4GHz Intel Core i7

Memory: 24GB 1600MHz DDR3

graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB

HDD: Fusion Drive (1TB)

Yosemite 10.10.4

Hello,

I've already searched for my problem - my iMac randomly restarts on its own after sleep - but haven't find any viable solution.

The issue:

  • the computer restart on its own from sleep - this happens during daytime or night, no difference in the time of the day;
  • no problems when I shut it down (in that case it doesn't restart on its own);
  • I don't receive any "kernel panic" warning or similar messages - it just restarts
  • I can't recall an event (new app installation or similar) that might have triggered the issue
  • the iMac is connected to the same power source since I bought it (more than 2 years ago) but the problem arose in the last three months or so.

What I've already done:

  • I have reset my SMC a couple of times
  • I have reset my PRAM a couple of times
  • I ran Disk Utility and both the Disk and Permissions are fine
  • I ran Apple Hardware Test and no issues were found
  • I restarted in Safe Mode (in my account, not a guest account)
  • I uninstalled Tuxera (the app for NTFS read-write on external drives)
  • I unplugged all external HDD's (USB and Thunderbolt)
  • in System Preferences I unchecked "Wake for Network access"

but the issue is still there.

Any thoughts?
Thanks

iMac (27-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), 24 GB RAM, Fusion Drive, 2 GB card

    Hi Eric

    thanks for your reply.

I'm not sure if I did the right selection of items in Console, however I found the following:

25/07/15 13:55:27,000 kernel[0]: The USB device HubDevice (Port 1 of Hub at 0x1d000000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (2)

25/07/15 13:55:27,000 kernel[0]: The USB device HubDevice (Port 8 of Hub at 0x1d100000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)

25/07/15 13:55:27,000 kernel[0]: The USB device BRCM20702 Hub (Port 1 of Hub at 0x1d180000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)

25/07/15 13:55:27,000 kernel[0]: The USB device Bluetooth USB Host Controller (Port 3 of Hub at 0x1d181000) may have caused a wake by issuing a remote wakeup (3)

and two crash reports in the Library folder:

    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/iMovie_2015-07-09-191536_iMac-(my name).crash

    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/MacX%20Video%20Converter%20Free%20Edition_2015-0 7-06-135251_iMac-(my name).crash

Should I look for something else?
    Thanks

and I also found the following logs:

    25/07/15 04:30:06,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EC.SleepTimer (SleepTimer)

    25/07/15 13:55:27,000 kernel[0]: Wake reason: EHC1

Which, more ore less, occurred when the iMac restored itself.

To get the Kernel Panic Log,

    1. Open Console.
    2. If the Log List is not showing, click the Show Log List button or use the command in the View menu.
    3. Look for the heading, System Diagnostic Reports. If the disclosure triangle is pointing right, click it so that it points down and shows all the items under that heading.
    4. Look for a report titled Kernel... (the rest of the name will be a date and time of the occurrence) ending in .panic
    5. Select the most recent report. It will display in the pane on the right.
    6. Select all of the report except the line with Anonymous UUID.
    7. Copy the selection (cmd-c)
    8. Reply to post here and paste in the report.

    Thanks.

I followed your instructions, however in Console I can't find any report titled Kernel (date and time of occurrence) ending in .panic.

Just to be sure, I also searched under "all messages" but no ".panic" reports can be find here either.

What can I do, now? Thanks

Then it is not logging the panic, which is possible. The panic is written to NVRAM when it happens and written to disk on restart.

This program, written by one of the long-time posters here, can show you what you have installed, but it is just a snapshot of your system. http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

It has a button to copy to the clipboard so that you can paste it into a reply here.

Some of the Anti-virus software has caused restarts on wake from sleep.

Are you certain Tuxera is fully uninstalled?

How about the drives you are using with Tuxera? Are they still connected? If so, disconnect and test.

Look in the All Messages during the time of the wakeup (I think the ones around the disk wakeups you posted before). Post the lines from when it wakes up to when it restarts. You should see a BOOT_TIME entry when it restarts.

I have no anti-virus sw installed on this machine, so I would take that out of the picture.

The etresoft scan gave this outcome:

    Problem description:

    random restarts from sleep

Re Tuxera: I used the uninstall feature that came with the app. I made a search in Finder looking for Tuxera system files (including invisible files) but I had no return.

No external drives are currently connected to the iMac.

You do not need to use cleaning programs. They can destroy your computer operation as they may already have done.

    CleanMyMac - Uninstall

    CleanMyMac2 Un-install

    CleanMyMac 3 Uninstall

After un-installing, use this program to make sure you got all the pieces.

    EasyFind – Spotlight Replacement

Startup – Computer restarts by itself – Yosemite

ok, so I've just uninstalled CleanMyMac2 and ran EasyFind which found some hidden CleanMyMac2 files, that I deleted.

I also applied what Apple suggests in the article you mentioned.

    Thanks.

What's next? What should I do with the obsolete startup items and the system launch daemon highlighted in red after the EtreCheck scan?

Did you get restarts after those wake events you posted? Those would be the only useful log entries, and if the system restarted, you would see a BOOT_TIME entry following the wake event. However, the wake event may never get posted. If you can identify the times of the restarts, look for the log entries immediately preceding the restart.

Are you using (or have connected) a USB network card? There is remnants of the software listed in the StartupItems (which don't work anymore).

Those will often cause panics and I would assume it might be related to a wake from sleep KP.

I don't see any software loading for one of those devices, but if the hardware is still connected, that could be a possibility.

Is it connected via Thunderbolt? There are some log entries referencing TB during the wake events you posted.

You also have a boatload of Swap being used which is surprising for having 24GB of RAM installed.

Take a look at Activity Monitor, Memory tab and see how the memory pressure looks (should be green. Maybe yellow to red if you are doing some high-horsepower computing). That may have all been caused by BrickMyMac2, so it may look ok, now.
