Q: Macbook Air Flashing Folder On Boot

Hello all, I have a Macbook air and it boots up to a folder with a question mark occasionally it would boot up to network recovery and sometimes it would boot up to the log in screen for me. I did command + R and I see I have a start up disk called OS X Base System, I created a partition and I selected that as the start up disk when I did get the chance to log on to the computer. It worked fine. I decided to reboot the computer multiple times to see if any error would occur. After about the 6th reboot the computer went back to the folder with a question mark, I then reboot the computer and go into recovery mode and select disk utility and the partition i created earlier and made my startup disk is not there. I then restarted the computer a few more times and it went into network recovery after selecting my network and going through the prompt i was taken to the log in screen. Now its just a mix of the above every time i reboot what can i do to fix this? And when I go into recovery mode I tried selecting the option of re-installing the OS but it does not display a disk for me to put it on. Thanks for the help.

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.1.x)
