What is the benefit of using OS X Snow Leopard vice Mavericks, Lion, M Lion, or Yosemite?

It seems like OS X Snow Leopard was the best working version of OS X from what many people say. What would be the benefit of using OS X SL over the more recent OS's?

Being able to run PowerPC applications; it's also likely to be faster on Macs with exactly 2GB of RAM.

But you should also ask what are the disavantages. It's a nice system and runs well in many ways; but it's not being supported any longer and doesn't get security updates, which could constitute a security risk. Furthermore, the highest version of Safari it can support is quite out of date and now won't open a number of websites properly (though FireFox should work OK as the latest version can run on SL). There are inevitably an increasing number of applications which won't run on it - and if you ever need to reinstall your existing applications and don't have the original install disks you are likely to find that in many cases downloads are not available.

If you are content with what you can do with it now, and can live with the restrictions - and are careful about possibly security issue - and particularly if you want to run AppleWorks or other PPC software, it has a lot going for it; but as time goes by using it may become more problematic.

Correct. If your computer can run Yosemite, then you should at least test the waters. It's not nearly as terrible as many people here protest. Every new version of OS X is proclaimed as the worst ever.

Upgrading to Yosemite

You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.

Upgrading to Yosemite

To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
