Itunes shows my ipad connected...it's not!

Itunes shows that my iPad is connected and it isn't. I've closed iTunes. I've tried to "eject" the phantom iPad. It's the dominant device and, when I plug my iPod in, it's always in the closed position (arrow pointing in) until I open it (click arrow to down position). However, the phantom iPad is always open. How do I get rid of it!!!

iPod nano, Mac OS X (10.6.3)

I FINALLY answered my own question after weeks and weeks of research. Here's what I did (via a computer search of the problem after posting this question. I hooked up my iPad to my Mac/iTunes. I opened iTunes AND clicked on the phantom iPad icon. I then unclicked the "sync over wifi" checkmark and, voilá, it worked! BTW, I've restarted my Mac dozens of times as well as 'quit' iTunes and neither worked. Thanks for the rapid response, though...
