Q: Do I really need this and is it a real component for Utilities?
I just want to set up my USB and got this message that I need Xii whatever that is. Is it safe to add to Utilities? The Mac Clean zombie that I can't get rid of has made me suspicious.
MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

'X11' is an alternative window manager, normally used by applications ported from other systems, that is of no interest to most Mac users. X11.app used to be maintained in-house by Apple and included as a standard part of OS X. These days opening X11.app simply refers you to instructions that explain how to install its replacement, which is now an open source project.
If an application you need to use requires X11 then it is quite safe to follow Apple's instructions and install XQuartz.
