Can Macbook Pro play back high-frequency audio files?

Hi all,

I have some WAV files that I made that are high frequency tones. I'm trying to play them back on my 2013 Macbook Pro connected to some headphones that should play up to 30 kHz. My hearing goes up to somewhere around 20 kHz.

  • I found that a WAV file that is 44100 Hz, and contains a 22050 Hz tone cannot be heard on these headphones.
  • I found that a WAV file that is 88200 Hz, and contains a 22050 Hz tone cannot be heard on these headphones.

There are various odd effects with some other files e.g. I made a set of files encoded at 88200 Hz that contain 16000-16900 Hz in 100 Hz increments. They sound like they are decreasing in pitch as I play them back in order of increasing frequency.

Is there a hard limit to the playback frequency of this computer? Or is the driver down-converting them to a lower frequency?

Thanks for any info.

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.4), null
