Using iCloud but also backed up to my iMac. How do I set up new iPad air from my Mac and iTunes?

received an note no iCloud backups are compatible with this version of IOS 8.3 on this ipad

the update installed but when I sync on iTunes, it shows the old iPad info. Something wrong. Thanks for help
