can i update ipod touch 2nd generation with newer ios of the present day?

I am also an owner of an iPod Touch 2gen, and I'm really sorry to inform you that the last iOS version that Apple pushed out for the 2nd gen iPod touch was 4.2.1. Nothing beyond that. I also sorry to inform you that the iPod touch 2g is beginning to become a bit outdates in terms of specs, and this is why Apple has stopped pushing out updates for it. It may be impossible to run some app like Adobe reader because:

1. They require more processing power than what the iPod touch has to offer
2. They require a later iOS version which is not available for iPod touch 2g
3. Last, but not least, the app may require something in terms of hardware that the iPod touch lacks. (eg. sensors that later iDevices have and may be required for the app to run, etc.)

I'm sorry again for this, but you can still use your iPod touch for music and old apps! Consider upgrading to a later iPod touch to get the experience of later iOS as well as better specs which lead to significant increase in overall performance, and much more!

The real limitation on the 2G is that it only has 128 MB of RAM. The 3G and 4G have 256, the 5G 512 and the 6G 1 GB

iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.

Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
