Q: security on a open wi-fi

looking for help guys,going away on holiday and i have a concern about open wi-fi,how can i secure my iphone,ipad against hackers,i am aware there is no guarentee of 100% protection ,but i'm working on the principle that a little protection is better than none.

any help would be greatly appreciated

IMHO, best thing to do is avoid sensitive/financial transactions over public Wifi, but if must, use a reliable VPN provider.
