I understand that you are unable to import your iPhone photos to your MacBook Pro. Here is a troubleshooting article that I would go through when experiencing this issue.
If you can't import photos from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your computer

I realized I had the photo setting switched off on my iCloud on my macbook as well. (grandkids are the culprits maybe????? LOL) For everyone out there , his videos are very helpful!!! He has a myriad of topics to choose from.. Since I don't speak computer very well, it helps that he shows a screen and how to do things. Thank you soon much Jason for your reply and reference!!
