Q: importing photos from another library in new library doesn't work.

I have imported over 40000 pictures from aperture to photo's and want to create a separate library with a selection of these photo's to make accessible on other devices via the cloud.

I have created the library but when I want to import photos from the other library I cannot acces the library.

What to do. It feels like i am almost there to solve my problem.

Thanks for yr help.

I Mac G5 M, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

The Photos.app does not support to import libraries into libraries, or to export partial libraries like Aperture does.

You can only export photos and import photos.  Select all photos you want to use in the second library and use "File > Export" to export them to folders on your Desktop. Then import those folders to your second library.

If you still have Aperture and your original Aperture  library, it would be easier to export the albums with your selected photos from Aperture as a new library with "File > Export > Library" and then open this exported partial Aperture Library in Photos to convert it to your iCloud Photo Library.  This wa y you can save all edits and meta data tags like keywords, faces, and locations.

You need Aperture 3.6 on MacOS X 10.10.3 or later. Did you already update to that version?   Updating to Aperture 3.6 After the Release of Photos

    Hi Leonie,

thanks very much, I am going to try this.

It feels as a lot of steps to do so...but I guess this is what it is.

Right after i imported my pictures into photos I realized I should have done this differently, with the alternative you suggest. But it seemed that I could not go back anymore. And to be honest I am a bit afraid I will lose data by putting it all back into aperture as I had once importing all my pictures from Iphoto into aperture a LOT of issues and spend days on the phone with the guys from support.

I did not delete either aperture library or the app. should I be able to try it like you suggest ? I will have a look at that also.  I use currently Aperture 3.6 so that should be ok.

thanks for your help. I might come back later if I experience issues.

Hi Leonie, back again! I looked into it and I imported the library back in to aperture and think I can start again.:-)

To avoid that I too many copies of the same pictures, you think can I delete safely the pictures in photo's ?

You could delete pictures in Photos, the duplicates in Photos and Aperture do not need much space.

When you migrate an Aperture library to Photos, the Photos Library will just use hard links to your aperture library for the originals and the previews. This way the additional copies in Photos do not need extra space.  See this link:  Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries - Apple Support

Since you said, that you invested much work into your new Photos Library I would keep it for a while, so you see the metadata you added.
