Q: How to update iPad 1 for higher ios

Buy a newer iPad that will support the newer version of iOS.

Ok, so there is NO WAY to download older apps for the original ipad 1?? Are ALL of the newer apps only created for the more recent, more current ipad models, that is so unfair, especially if you can't afford to upgrade

Whether or not an app has a version available for older iOS versions is entirely up to the app vendor. Some do (Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support), but many do not. You can of course contact any vendor, but at this point it is highly unlikely any vendor that does not currently support 5.1.1 will elect to do so.
