I have an iMac 27" late 2013 model with 2x4 GB RAM installed.
I would like to upgrade this with at least an extra 2x8 GB RAM.
Is it possible to add 2x8 GB RAM to the existing 2x4 GB RAM, or should RAM size be the same in all slots? (i.e. 4x4 GB, 4x8 GB or 2x8GB)

According to this article you can. But a call to them would be the best line of action. Of general information, matching the memory is best but not absolutely assential.
So long as you are planning on purchasing quality RAM,
just plug the modules into the empty slots. Putting the
same size modules in all slots will provide somewhat better
performance, however will not be noticeable in normal use.
No problem with that configuration, so long (as others have said) the RAM is to the correct spec. It's the configuration I'm running and it all works a charm:
