Jul 26, 2015 11:00 AM in response to inisby cdhw,Have to boot from the correct installation (usually second) disk that came with the Mac for it to work.
What you describe is more likely to be software than hardware. If you use EtreCheck:
http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck
and post the report here people will suggest possible remedies.

Jul 27, 2015 6:59 AM in response to inisby MrHoffman,Your disk is apparently failing. Get a backup of its contents now — that backup may not be complete and some files may be corrupt — and make plans to get a hardware repair.
-
Jul 27, 2015 7:48 AM in response to MrHoffmanby inis,Well, eff. Any idea how much the hardware repair will be? I bought this machine new in November 2011. If 3.5 years is a common life span of an iMac, is it even worth it?
So disappointing. I moved to Apple because of their reputation for good products. I have friends who are going on ten years with their Macs. ***? Has the quality dropped since then?
Sorry to vent at you. But I'm extremely ****** right now.

It is not, but your iMac is in the range of models that were affected by a recall concerning premature failures of 1 TB Seagate hard disk drives, which that iMac has. As far as I know that program ended a while ago, but contact Apple to determine if you may be eligible.
If not, expect the replacement cost including parts and labor to be on the order of $400 US. You can replace the hard disk yourself for considerably less than $100, but it is a tedious procedure.
Post a corresponding report for your MacBook Pro. It would be very coincidental for it to fail in a similar manner.
Edit to add: Confirm that you are using either an Apple AirPort Time Capsule or an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station for your Time Machine backup device. You are going to need it.
-
Jul 27, 2015 8:28 AM in response to John Galtby inis,Wow. The video card in it was replaced just last winter. It too was part of a recall. NO ONE mentioned that the hard drive was suspect and should be replaced as well. Never a peep from Apple. I am beyond livid. I expected so much more from this company.
Yes, to answer your question, I'm using an Apple Time Machine on auto backup. I'm also uploading everything important to DropBox, because who knows if the time machine is effed up as well.
Going to check my MacBook now.
BTW, how can I check if my products are being recalled?
-
Jul 27, 2015 8:46 AM in response to inisby John Galt,Here you go: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/
The following was the text from the subject recall:
Apple has determined that a very small number of Seagate 1TB hard drives used in 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMac systems, may fail under certain conditions. These systems were sold between May 2011 and July 2011.
Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP) will replace affected hard drives free of charge.
Apple is contacting affected iMac owners who provided a valid email address during the product registration process to let them know about this program. If you have not been contacted, but think you have a 1TB Seagate hard drive, you can enter your serial number below [ed: link no longer active] to see if it's part of this program.
Although the date range ending July 2011 is accurate, if you did not purchase your iMac directly from Apple it may have been sitting in someone else's inventory until November.
As I wrote earlier, as far as I know the recall program was extended through April 2013 and is no longer active.
... I'm using an Apple Time Machine on auto backup.
Understood, but I wanted to confirm that you are using either an Apple AirPort Time Capsule or an Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station for your Time Machine backup device. Third party network storage devices are not compatible with Time Machine so they cannot be relied upon. Whatever backups you have are now indispensable.

Jul 27, 2015 8:54 AM in response to John Galtby inis,Yes, it's an AirPort Time Capsule. I got it the same day I bought the iMac -- directly from the Colorado Springs Apple Store.
Just scheduled a repair appointment. Thinking I'll take my hubby with me, because I just might go ballistic if they don't honor that recall. Heck, I might just go ballistic on principle alone. LOL.

Jul 27, 2015 9:07 AM in response to inisby torreypines,No worries - your diagnostic program tells us that your hard drive has errors and needs to be repaired. What you need to do is enter the Disk Utility program (while your computer is using a USB cable keyboard and while your computer is directly connected to Ethernet, not wifi). Start your iMac and then when you have a successfully logged in - restart your iMac - and as soon as you hear the startup sound, press Control-R which will send you to the Disk Utility Menu. When you reach the menu, click on Repair Disk. Repairing all your current iMac hard disk errors will take some time, then you need to exit the Disk Utility menu when you are finished with Disk Repair - and finally you need to restart. Here is your obvious problem:
ST31000528AS disk0 : (1 TB)
EFI (disk0s1) <not mounted> : 210 MB
Macintosh HD (disk0s2) / : 999.35 GB (658.81 GB free) - 529 errors

Jul 27, 2015 9:08 AM in response to inisby John Galt,Without delving too deeply into that MBP's problems, it would almost certainly benefit from more RAM. That Mac can address as much as 16 GB, though 8 GB ought to be sufficient. The same goes for your iMac, after you replace its hard disk drive.
Google products will contribute to poor performance. Google has yet to demonstrate the ability or apparent inclination to write efficient OS X apps. If you are required to use Google products, expect a very limited useful economic life from your hardware investment.
-
Jul 27, 2015 9:12 AM in response to inisby John Galt,By the way to invoke the Internet version of Apple Hardware Test hold option d (two fingers) at startup. That should work.
You must remove the firmware password, if one has been set, before you can use AHT.

Jul 27, 2015 10:22 AM in response to John Galtby inis,Thank you, John. I've deleted Google Drive from both machines. And will consider upgrading RAM as well. It really depends how the company responds to my iMac issue.

Jul 27, 2015 11:33 AM in response to inisby Eric Root,The 2 places I’ve seen recommended most to buy reliable RAM are below. I have purchased RAM several times from Other World Computing and have always been very satisfied with the product and service. They have on-line instructions on how to replace the RAM. OWC has also tested RAM above what Apple states is the maximum. I now have 6GB installed on a early 2008 iMac supposedly limited to 4 GB and noticed an improvement.
Also, if you want to consider replacing the hard drive yourself, the 2nd link has videos of how to do the swap. That way you can see what it will take before making a decision.
