Safari 8 Allows Redirects, Pop-Ups, and Plays Previously Deleted Cache

Hello,

Just FYI, my computer is:

Model Name: MacBook Pro 15

Model Identifier: MacBookPro11,3

Date: Mid 2014

Display: Retina - NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB

Processor Name: Intel Core i7

Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 4

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 16 GB

Disk: 500GB SSD

Boot ROM Version: MBP112.0138.B14

SMC Version (system): 2.19f12

OSX: 10.10.4

Getting my computer back from the Genius Bar, where they did a clean install, I now have major Safari problems. The problems seem to fit into several catagories:

1. Pop-Up Windows and Re-Directs

Even though I have Safari Security set to disable pop-ups, and have added additional extensions like Ad-Block Plus, I am getting windows that pop-up and start playing their content. I am also getting redirected to other websites, and being prohibited from visiting others.

2. Plays Previously stored Cache

An example might provide a good illustration and a laugh. My 13 daughter and I like to watch Animal Planets on TV. Particularly "River Monsters" starring Jeremy Wade. I was working in my study, my daughter asked when River Monsters was showing on TV. I checked the Animal Planets website, listened to Jeremy Wade describe the new season and got the show time. A couple of days ago I was reading from the www.washingtontimes.com website and left my computer sit for a bit. All of sudden Jeremy Wade starts to talk from the River Monsters advertisement.

I daily clean cache. I also use Safari Extensions and third party apps to delete cookies, cache, history, etc. every time I close Safari. This is really strange.

Any ideas would be appreciated?

Regardless of what they did at the Genius Bar, you still need to check for malware.

Redirects and pop ups are due to adware and malware.

Download and run Malwarebyyes Anti-Malware for Mac formerly known as AdwareMedic. It's free.

Make sure Mac App Store and identified developers is selected in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General

if you would rather not download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, you can remove the malware manually following the instructions here > Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support

Adblock Plus for Mac is itself adware/malware. They intentionally copy the stop sign logo of the real Adblock plugin to fool users into installing it. Get rid of it and most of the ads should disappear. I say most since you may have yet other adware installed.

The true Adblock for Mac is here.

If you got Adblock Plus from Softonic or CNET's www.downloads.com, those sites often install more adware on top of that. Avoid downloading anything from those sites in the future.

Don't use any kind of "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" product on a Mac. There is never a need for it, and relying on it for protection makes you more vulnerable to attack, not less.

This easy procedure will detect any kind of ad-injection malware that I know of. Deactivating the malware is a separate, and even easier, procedure that doesn't involve downloading anything.

Some legitimate software is ad-supported and may display ads in its own windows or in a web browser while it's running. That's not malware and it may not show up.

Step 1

Please triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

~/Library/LaunchAgents

In the Finder, select

Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. Press return. Either a folder named "LaunchAgents" will open, or you'll get a notice that the folder can't be found. If the folder isn't found, go to the next step.

If the folder does open, press the key combination command-2 to select list view, if it's not already selected. There should be a column in the Finder window headed Date Modified. Click that heading twice to sort the contents by date with the newest at the top. If necessary, enlarge the window so that all of the contents are showing.

Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Take a screenshot of a window." An image file with a name beginning in "Screen Shot" should be saved to the Desktop. Open the screenshot and make sure it's readable. If not, capture a smaller part of the screen showing only what needs to be shown.

Start a reply to this message. Drag the image file into the editing window to upload it. You can also include text in the reply.

Leave the folder open for now.

Step 2

Do as in Step 1 with this line:

/Library/LaunchAgents

The folder that may open will have the same name, but is not the same, as the one in Step 1. As in that step, the folder may not exist.

Step 3

Repeat with this line:

/Library/LaunchDaemons

This time the folder will be named "LaunchDaemons."

Step 4

Open the Safari preferences window and select the Extensions tab. If any extensions are listed, post a screenshot. If there are no extensions, or if you can't launch Safari, skip this step.

Step 5

If you use the Firefox or Chrome browser, open its extension list and do as in Step 4.
