Welcome to the Apple Community.
Why from iCloud, you can export them from photos on your Mac.
the pictures are in a shared folder on iCloud. i have tried dragging and dropping to the thumb drive and that won't work. iPhoto does not give me an option to move the files. ultimately i want to put on thumb drive so i can delete on iCloud and free up some space.
I'm a little lost, I'm not aware you can share folders on iCloud, do you mean a shared album in Photos. If so, you need to import them to your library first, then export them to the USB stick.
thanks. yes it was a shared album in photos. when i select 50 photos to import only 9 photos are transferred??
Photos or iPhoto - you keep changing the name. If the photos are in Photos, select the first photo, then while holding down the shift key, select the rest of the photos you want on the thumb drive. Then Photos/File/Export Photos. Select the thumb drive.
You aren't really being all that clear about what you are doing, but if you selected 50 photos from a shared album to import and only 9 got imported, I suspect the rest were already in you library.
