How do I write music directly in the Score Editor ?

I would like to use the Score Editor of Logic Pro X to write music in the traditional (not MIDI) way, as well as import PDF sheet music and turn it into MIDI. Is this feasible, and if not, what is the best way to do it with another piece of software, and which ? Sibelius, Finale ?

Thanks in advance for any help

Go here and read some of the manual first.

http://help.apple.com/logicpro/mac/10/

Enter Score Editor in the search bar at top. Go to Logic's preferences and make sure ALL "Advanced Tools" are enabled.

What you are asking is possible, but you need to do some homework first.

Go here and download the Logic User Guide, bottom right.

Also, go to youtube and enter: using Logic's score editor in the search dialog.

From the Logic Pro 9 manual (a more comprehensive manual than the Logic X manual)

https://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=31%26s ection=7%26tasks=true

And here, from Mac Pro Video.

Yes, the macProVideo tutorial is done by Peter Schwartz, one of the Logic specialists who knows the Score Editor inside-out. I can highly recommend it.

If you need a written manual with more in-depth explanations, then I can recommend my own manual Logic Pro X - The Details (available as pdf, printed book, or interactive multi-touch iBook). One of the reasons for the often frustrating experience when using the Score Editor is the "special" concept that Logic uses with many parameters influencing the way your score looks. With lots of diagrams and illustrations I explain on 90 pages in the "Music Notation" chapter how that works and how you use every single element in the Score Editor.

Here are two examples that demonstrates the underlying complexity of the Score Editor

The Notes

The way a note appears on a staff is determined by many different parameters ("forces"). In order to determine a specific look of a note. You have to know what those parameters are that can mess with that.

The Layout

Creating a specific layout on your score can be extremely frustrating in Logic. Again, you have to be aware of all the parameters that you have to take into account. Her is a diagram from the book that shows what elements influence that look.

Hope that helps
