How do I control the the time the apple watch displays stays active.

My apple watch is acting differently than when I first received it. Now when I raise my wrist I get the clock display but only for ~1.5 seconds before it goes to black. If I am quick and press the crown in the 1.5 seconds I get the application display. However that is only visible for ~ 1 second before the display goes to black. I can no longer select an app. Basically all I can use the watch for is the watch capability since the display never stays on long enough to interact with the watch. Is there a setting that causes this ? Is there a software update that caused this or that can fix this ?

Have you tried restarting - or if that doesn't work - force restarting your Apple Watch?

Restart: Press and hold the side button until you see the Power Off slider, Drag the slider to turn off your device completely, After you turn off your Apple Watch, press and hold the side button again until you see the Apple logo.

Force restart: To force restart your Apple Watch, press and hold both the side button and Digital Crown for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
