Connecting a MacBook Pro to a Thunderbolt Display

Hi Guys,

I have a 13in MacBook Pro which I use all the time. I am about to purchase the 27in Thunderbolt Display to connect to. My question is, can I connect my MacBook, then close it and continue working on the 27in Display or do I need to have the MacBook still open?
