iPhone 6 - using temporary UK sim card

I have a US Verizon iPhone 6 and travel to the UK for about 3 months a year. In the past, I've carried a separate UK mobile flip phone with a Vodafone sim card. I'd prefer to use my iPhone 6, but with the UK sim card number. If I get a Vodafone or BT (nano) sim card, will it work with my Verizon iPhone - and then replace the Verizon sim when I return?

iPhone 6, iOS 8, null

The easiest way to check if your iPhone is unlocked is to insert into it a SIM Card from a different network provider. If it connects to that different network, then it's unlocked. But if you get an error message such as "INVALID SIM" etc then it means the iPhone is locked. This is the easiest way to check if your iPhone is unlocked.

First you need to make sure your iPhone is network unlocked. And if you're from the USA, you could pick up a UK SIM Card from www.myuksimcard.com and get it shipped to your home address in the USA. It has lots of 4G LTE data, minutes and texts, and a UK mobile number.

Thanks. I'm still somewhat concerned though after reading a Macworld UK article (http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/iphone/why-not-buy-us-iphone-for-uk-3481491/) which seems to imply that a Verizon iPhone 6 is not compatible with, say, BT's 4G network for data. It seems Vodafone is compatible, but BT is not mentioned. Does this mean my Verizon iPhone will work with the GSM network but won't sync with the BT 4G data network - even if I change the sim card?

Since you stated you plan to you use a Vodafone card, why does this matter? If the BT isn't LTE compatible for your phone, it would data connect using 3G.

See this for the full LTE compatibility with supported carriers:

BT use the EE network and are in fact in the process of trying to get approval to purchase EE

I assume you have the A1549 (CDMA ) model

That does not have the same width of channels that the A1548 (GSM/CDMA)has which is the model sold in EU and most of non Americas

Mac world may well be correct regardless of the UK carrier

You can do what I did in October. Buy a Pay-As-You-Go sim card from, say, a Vodafone store in the UK and replace your iPhone AT&T sim card with it (keep the AT&T sim card to put back when you return!!). The Vodafone card will probably cost you £10 and after that runs out, you can refill it with more ££ as needed (either from a store voucher or an online account if you want to set that up). Calling back to the US or using a lot of data will burn up your ££ quickly.

..Obviously the Vodafone sim card will give you a new UK number so tell your friends...

I have the same question about an ATT iPhone 6. I am going to England in a week an need to know how to get phone service.

Thanks

You really need to contact ATT for specifics on international travel.

If your iPhone is unlocked, just a buy a sim card from a UK carrier and be on your way.

If the phone is locked to ATT, then either only use it for WiFi or buy one of their international packages.

This would only work if the iPhone was unlocked.
