Hello everyone, I have a concern. My dad recently gave me his MacBook Pro, I'm guessing is an early 2006 since it was introduced in febuary. I would like to find a way to make it so I can upgrade to more than 2 gb of ram, whether it's custom firmware or something like that. Any help would be appreciated.

A model identifier 1.1 MBP is limited to 2 GB RAM. I know, I have one ( I lied, it is a 1.2 but it makes no difference 🙂).
Consider installing a SSD which will pep it up a bit but understand it has SATA1 connectivity and full potential of the SSD will not be achieved.

Hmm, I'm wondering if having a larger hard drive could have a better affect in performance. I am a minecraft gamer and I like to have the best performance and I know that macs with ATI cards are my favorite and have the best performance. I hate having the limitation of having less ram. But, is there a possible way to upgrade the vram to 512mb, it already has 256mb. The graphics card is the ati radeon x1600
What is on the logic board cannot be changed. The GPU by today's standards is very slow. You have to accept that.

Well, actually I believe you are incorrect. I found a gpu, the Nvidia GeForce than seems to be a perfect fit for my macbook pro, with the correct port and everything. And it is totally faster and will give me higher fps and is totally better quality and a higher clock speed. Super Awesome!
The model 1.1 MBP came with a ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 GPU. A NVIDIA GrForce 8600 GT was introduced with the 3.1 model MBP. I must assume that you are going to swap in a logic board from a newer MBP or are an artist with a soldering iron and replace just the NVIDIA GPU. I would be very interested which approach you are taking and the results.

I don't have the 3,1 macbook pro, I have the 1,1 with the mobility radeon. I said I was going to look at the GPU it currently has, and see if it matches to the nvdia geforce gt 120 gpu I found on Ebay, If it doesn't have a replaceable gpu, then I will Find another solution
The GPU is soldered into the logic board on all MBPs. It cannot be replaced unless you have the facility and expertise to un-solder it.

Dear OGELTHROPE, I understand your reply that you think the graphicds are soldered, but that is not what system profiler says. Take a look for yourself. It even tells me it is a gpu and the exact lane width

And what part of that system profiler report indicates that the GPU is removable/upgradable?
Well, if it wasnt removable or it was an integrated chip, it wouldnt give me the lane width would it. The iMac 4,1 doesnt have a replacable gpu so it didnt give me lane width. I believe the macbook pro does have dedicated graphics because it gives me detailed information on the graphics configuration.
