You had Pages '09 open, and attempted to double-click a Pages v5 document which does not contain the internal index.xml file. Quit Pages '09, and double-click the document from the Finder to open it in the correct (v5) version of Pages.

You're correction worked perfectly. Thanks a lot. Now a follow up....... Pages in my Applications is v 5.5.3 How did I open Pages09? Is it lurking somewhere? Thanks for any comment.
Pages 5.5.3 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages '09 is the good one with 100+ more features than Pages 5.5.3, way less buggy and more compatible, it exports files better and runs on multiple versions of OSX not just Yosemite and I am sure Apple will pull the same stunt when it releases El Capitan (OSX10.11) soon and yet again you will not be able to open your files in previous OSXs.
Our best advice, avoid Pages 5.5.3 unless you really are a masochist.

Thanks for the help!!! Didn't even know I had an iWORK file. I will be more careful using Pages in future. I still forward some docs to an old Mac where I still have WORD installed as there are some functions I still haven't figured out on Pages. Fortunately conversions back and forth have been very seamless.
You don't have an iWork file.
iWork is the Apple suite of 3 separate applications: Pages, Numbers and Keynote.
