apps won't update

I just bought a new Macbook Air 3 days ago and when I first turned it on, I had 3 apps that needed to be updated (keynote, pages, and numbers.) When I press the 'update all' button, all the 'update' buttons next to each app dim like they're processing but after about 5 minutes nothing has updated and the buttons are back to normal. (I don't know if that makes any sense but I'm trying to explain it as best as I can) When I click the update button next to each app individually, the pinwheel spins like it's loading but after a few minutes nothing has happened and it stops spinning and the button is normal....I've left it to load overnight thinking my WiFi was slow and it would take some time but nothing has happened...any tips on how I can update?
