Restart OSX Yosemite without losing data

As my Macbook Pro stopped working, I managed PRAM, but it's still not working. Starting with CTRL+Command+P+R I can choose between Time Machine, Reinstall OSX or utility Disco. Because I don't have a backup, I tried to connect a totally new hard disk in order to copy all my data and the try to reinstall the OSX, but my Mac doesn't see the new HD. Even if I read that reinstalling the OSX will not loose the data, I'm so so afraid. Can anyone help me to save the data, please? Thank you. Monica

Time Machine is your backup.

Is the new external drive not seen by Disk Utility? Is it not seen when you attempt to restore from TM? Is it properly formatted for Mac?

Mac OS Extended (Journaled)?

I didn't backup my mac since 6 or 7 months...

The new external drive is not seen in disk utility. Actually I don't understand why... it has been formatted for mac 😟

but if I run Time machine I suppose it ask me an external drive where TM machine can find the data. But I have any backup. OMG

oh, now disk utility has seen it. so, now, what i have to do to copy all my data in this new drive?
