Problem Updating Apps on my iPhone 4s w iOS 8.4

I have been buying and using apps from the iTunes store on my iPhone 4s for several years with no problems. Recently, when I try to request an update for a previously purchased app I get a prompt to enter my AppleId password. The problem is that the AppleId it is requesting a password for has been inactive for some time. It is not the AppleId I am currently using. I do not have the password for that other AppleId and though I have tried several times to access it through MyAppleId, I cannot. I have tried deleting and reinstalling all my iPhone apps, but the problem persists. I suspect the problem is with the iTunes store, but I don't have a clue as to what else I can do, or if their is anyone who can help me.

Hi docLarsen,

I understand you are trying to update an app that was purchased on a different Apple ID than the one you currently use, is that right? You can only update or re-download an item from the Apple ID that you used to purchase it. If you have been unable to find your previous Apple ID or update its password, I'll include a link below for you to contact our Apple ID Support team. Once you have that information, on your iPhone, you can sign out from your current Apple ID, then sign in with the old Apple ID, go to the Purchases tab, and update the software.

Redownload an app

On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

  1. Tap App Store.
  2. On an iPhone or iPod touch: Tap Updates, then tap Purchased.
    On an iPad: Tap Purchased.
  3. Scroll to find the app that you want to download.
  4. Tap the Download icon User uploaded file. After the app downloads, you can open it from your Home screen.
