Recommendations for external drive for 2008 Macbook?

I'm still using a pretty old Mac and I need a new external hard drive to stash video and photo files on.:

Here's what I'm working with:

MacBook 4,1

Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 3 MB

Memory: 4 GB

Bus Speed: 800 MHz

Any recommendations on a good drive to choose? I have had problems with external drives in the past. Memory sticks always work fine (guessing the difference is power) but I would like to get something larger--like a 1TB drive.
