What model?

DV or HDV?

Do you have the proper firewire cable?

Is the camera on and in the VTR mode?

If it is HDV, check the internal camera menus on the camera to make sure that the camera is not downconverting the HDV to DV - many cameras default to this - at the iLink (firewire) port. If it is, it will present itself to the computer as a DV source, and if you have used the Easy Setup for HDV, FCP will not see it.
