Errors typically present themselves by the Express base station's LED status light. Errors show up as a blinking amber light. What the exact error is will be shown in the AirPort Utility on the utility's status page. From there you can attempt resolving the error.

Currently, I am not aware of any documentation that has every possible error that can detected & remedied. Sorry.

I'll suggest starting with the AirPort Express Setup Guide - Troubleshooting begins on page 35.

The light WAS blinking amber, but I rebooted (by unplugging, waiting, replugging]; now it is green but I still get error -6753 when it "scans" (whatever that means) and I'm not able to check for updates... I tried to do a configure action but it is looking for "*.baseconfig" which doesn't seem to be on my computer.  I am running Windows 7

Mike, I think that manual might be for another computer setup or operating system... my manual only goes to p. 32 and doesn't require a "AirPort Card".   I have a stand-alone Airport Express connected to an Intel/Windows 7 OS.  The manual you referenced refers to XP and 2000 OS's.

My manual has "Tips and Trouble shooting" starting on p.16 and I've been through it all... I continually get an error: one is -6753 and the other is "There was a error connecting to the update server.  Check your network settings and try again." with no number.  I have no problem connecting to the internet.  but this all started with me trying to find the network security key while trying to get my HP printer connected wirelessly.

Try powering down the entire network.  Then beginning with your modem/router, power each device back up, waiting a minute or two between each one.  Then try again for Updates.

In the meantime I'll double check that link I posted above.

did that... still get ""There was a error connecting to the update server.  Check your network settings and try again." with no number.  when I try to check for updates.  I am currently connected to various servers across the country with no apparent problems.  Response pinging via command window looks o.k.  I'm beginning to wonder if the error message is bogus and that the problem rests with the fact that "*.baseconfig" files are missing.  I suspect I should reinstall the Airport Express software.

This is the manual I downloaded: https://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/1000/MA1613/en_US/airport_express_80211n _2nd_gen_setup_guide.pdf

Do you happen have another AirPort device on your network?  If so, maybe go to it and try connecting to the Update server.

no other device... do you happen to know where I can download the files that would have come on the install CD?  I've had this device for a few years and the CD is missing in action.  I've searched the file system for *.baseconfig and none exists.  I had a few computer crashes and rebuilds in the past year and I suspect they got wiped out in the process.

What's odd is that my utility version is 5.6.1 but the version shown for windows is 5.5.3   5.6.1 is for Leopard/Snow Leopard so I'm beginning to wonder if I've had the incorrect utility all along and just didn't realize it... I set this up 3 or 4 years ago and haven't had to mess with it since.  Wait... that doesn't make sense... my version says "Airport Utility for Windows"... hmmm

There maybe some help there although that Troubleshooting Guide is not Windows specific.

Error -6753 typically means that the AirPort Utility is having difficulty communicating with the base station. For Windows devices this usually manifests itself in one or both of the following two areas: 1) Windows (or third-party) software firewall is enabled and the correct ports are not opened, and/or 2) IPv6 is not enabled.

thanks... now that I realize I must have an Airport Extreme and not Airport Express... I am starting over on the trouble shooting... hopefully somewhere I will find out which ports I need to open.  I'll turn off the firewall temporarily and see what happens. I don't know what IPv6 is... a service perhaps?

For reference, the AirPort Utility for Windows, that support the 802.11g & 802.11n AirPort base stations are as follows (version / Windows version supported):

    • 5.6.1 / Win7 SP1 (link included)
    • 5.5.3 / Win7 SP1, Vista SP2, or WinXP SP3
    • 5.4.2 / Vista, WinXP SP2
    • 5.4.1 / Vista, WinXP SP2

Yes, temporarily turning off the software firewall is a good start. If I remember correctly Windows' firewall security will notice that an application is attempting to access some ports and offer to let you let it or not. Not sure if this was in Win7 or not.

IPv6 is version 6 of the IP protocol. By default, it should already be enabled on your Win7 device. The idea here is to verify that it is. I don't have a PC handy, but I'll try to get you the steps to do so in a bit. Hopefully the firewall option will work for you.

One other thing is, if you don't already have it installed, is to install Bonjour for Windows. This should help as well.
