Windows 8.1 and iTunes 12.2.1.16

I'm having major issues with compatibility of iTunes 12.2.1.16 and Windows 8.1. I've read through some of the forums and have done the following:

  • Downloaded QuickTime
  • Changed iTunes compatibility to Windows 7
  • Tried to copy a QT.dll over to iTunes (unsuccessfully)

This is incredibly frustrating! I only use Apple products (for this reason), but am trying to get my parents computer set up with iTunes. I find it ridiculous that it's this hard to get it to work! Every time I open it (particularly when trying to get to the store), it freezes and I have to turn the entire computer off and back on again to reset.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem? I'll be forever grateful.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If the issue persists and you have a 64-bit system try the for older video cards version which is a 64-bit installer for mostly 32-bit code, similar to all 64-bit versions of iTunes up to 12.1.

Thank you for your suggestions. I literally downloaded iTunes for the first time, tried to get it to work and it froze. So I'm not sure a complete removal and reinstall will do anything different, unless I'm missing something? I just have no idea why this is such a problem...I've installed iTunes on PCs many times before and never had this much frustration.

Installing QuickTime and then copying files from one place to another shouldn't be required, particularly on a fresh system. That said, if the installation is sour then a complete uninstall and reinstall often fixes things. In general iTunes no longer relies on QuickTime although in some cases there may be formats that iTunes cannot handle natively if there is no direct hardware support in which case QuickTime may be needed. If so then I think that you also have to install this version - iTunes 12.2.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) - rather than standard iTunes6464setup file. In addition many people who have been unable to get the full 64-install to work properly have had success with the other version. I would remove all Apple components, clean out any remnants of the installation folders as listed and reboot before tying to install this version without QuickTime to start with. Disable any AV during the install. Right-click on the downloaded installer and use the Run as Administrator option, even if you are using an administrator account.
