LaCie Backup disk issue with new 5K iMac

I upgraded my 27" 2009 iMac to late 2014 5K iMac (16GB 1600 Mhz DDR3) via using my 2TB LaCie external hard drive. While the changeover appears to be successful I now get a message " Time Machine couldn't complete backup to Lacie. "

"The backup disk needs 711.79 GB for the backup but only 567.06 GB are available. Select a larger backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding files".

I had no problems before and there is plenty of free storage on the disk.

Can anyone advise what I should do?

Then the drive is not connected to the computer or is not mounting. Check if the power is turned on for the drive. What do you actually see listed in Disk Utility? Take a snapshot and post here.
