Q: calendar alerts for recurring event; thousands of alerts

I have set up recurring alert to remind me of a birthday. I did this years ago on an earlier version of Calendar. The alerts for the event number in the thousands one week prior to the date of the event. I have been trying to fix this for years with no luck. Every year these alerts bring all my Apple devices to a stand still. Quite annoying.

I have tried to delete the recurring event without success. Considering removing the program but do not want to lose the other information on the calendar.

Any idea?

Is this a local ("On My Mac") calendar, or is it synchronized with a network service such as iCloud?

I initially set this up on an I-mac in 2007. At that time, the Calendar was only local. The, with an I-phone, I started to share the calendar, e-mail, notes,...

So not this is synchronized with network service, which is I-cloud. I have a number of other apple computers and they all are affected.
