What happened to "TODAY" under Finder and why can't I share (via email) my documents

Hello -- while my data is being transferred from trusty Snow Leopard to I guess Yosemite, I notice that on the friend's Macbook Pro, 10.9.5, that the incredibly valuable "TODAY" category -- enabling you to work quickly on stuff immediately needed -- is GONE!!! Is that true for Yosemite, if so are there any work-arounds? Second, on this same laptop, the "Share via E-Mail" for my word docs is suddenly missing ... is that because I am not on Apple Mail but on Chrome Gmail ... what gives, and many thanks!
