Why is my new MacBook Pro not connecting to my 1.5 year old iPhone 5s through Airdrop?

My new MacBook can send pics to my iPhone 5s but my phone can't find the macbook pro. Thought for sure they'd work together but no joy. Tried with my old macbook and it won't even register blue tooth its so out of date with the iPhone 5s but the 5s and my mac book were released not much over a year apart. So, in theory they should be compatible right? Any ideas? Thanks
