Nano -- never used -- will not turn on, recharge or reset

We bought our daughter an iPod Nano Gen 7 for Christmas in 2013, and she never even took it out of the box. It just sat there for a year and a half unused. So, I finally took it back last week, but it just sits there with a black screen. I've tried all the trouble-shooting I could find in this community. Could the battery have simply died over the last year and half? I may

That is exactly what happened, Lithium Polymer batteries need exercise, a full charging cycle every month. Take it to Apple and have the battery replaced.
