division error number

Hi, help me please! When i divided int number for decimal the result is the result is incorrect!


59/1,10=53,63636363 but is incorrect!

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.4)

Hi Decorlegno,


Conversion of a number (that we humans understand) to a binary number (that computers understand) sometimes involves a small error.

The computer does the calculations in binary.

Converting back again to decimal (so that we humans can understand) sometimes involves a small error.


Excel "corrects" a result to show what you expect. Calculators also "correct" a result.

Numbers does not "correct". It follows the international rules for handling decimal to binary, and binary to decimal.


The ROUND function is your friend. Here are some examples:

I suggest that you ignore the small errors in intermediate calculations (Column C). Let Numbers handle that problem. Use ROUND only when you need to display the final result, to the precision that you want.
