Why won't my smart playlists live update on iPod Touch?

I've been searching for a solution for this all over and a lot of the posts I'm finding are all from 2008-2010 with no real resolution at the end. Wondering if this has been fixed or if there's a setting I'm missing? Just got an iPod Touch a few days ago, I've always used Classics until now and never had this problem before. I have my smart playlists set to live update, but they aren't updating on my iPod Touch until I plug it in and sync to iTunes again. Super inconvenient, as I'm often not home for days at a time. Any suggestions?
