I have a mac book pro and for some reason the brightness buttons won't work when i press them down. I was wondering if there's a reason for that.

See if you have the brightness buttons disabled in System Preferences>Displays>Options.
If that is not the cause then try resetting the SMC and NVRAM/PRAM

See if they work while pressing the Fn key.
Check the "Use all F1..." setting in the Keyboard tab of the Keyboard system preference.
