I was keeping an iCloud backup of my old iPhone in order to restore it later on another device. But suddenly it has disappeared. Does Apple delete them without warning after a specific period?

But I cannot find it anymore under Settings -> iCloud and I did not delete it.
Do you mean settings > iCloud > storage > manage storage > backups.
Exactly. There's only the backup of the phone I currently use shown. The old backup of the previous phone ist gone although I have enough space left.

Apple don't auto delete old data, I couldn't say why this has happened.
