We have an old gateway monitor and want to get a new monitor. Finances are tight and I have seen an ACER monitor that we can afford. Will it be compatible with mac mini? Please respond.

Since old, I suspect you have a monitor with a VGA connector. Then you need:

The Mini comes with one internal speaker. It is very very poor.
You can get any speaker made for a PC as long as then have the standard 3.5 mm stereo plug. It is the same plug used with stereo headphones
I have a VGA adaptor for the mac mini. The VGA at the end of the plug fits into the adaptor and that goes into the computer. I hope I can use the same adaptor in the new monitor. I thank you for your comments on the speakers. I will look into getting one with speakers. I hope it will fit on my computer table. Thank you again.
It would help everyone here if you provided the actual model number of the Acer monitor. With most new monitors, it would make no sense to use an analog VGA connection over a DisplayPort, DVI, or HDMI digital connection.

I would get an HDMI>DVI adopter. That way you will not tie up a Thunderbolt port.

The Mac Mini late 2012. I have yosemite on it.
That model has an HDMI port and one Thunderbolt port and thus the HDMI>DVI adopter works and leaves the Thunderbolt free for other uses

Yes they can work. I have two 20" Acer plunged into my Mac mini right now. Works fine, but in portrait mode is where you will have problems. I'm still trying to fix that problem.
