Are you installing W8 or W8.1?
Hi and thanks for a quick response, the dvd is an expanded iso of windows8, the 8.1 will go on after installation of 8 as an upgrade
You can manually partition the disk, create the necessary hybrid MBR and boot from the built-in Optical drive using a W8 DVD and once Windows is installed, upgrade to W8.1. BCA typically does this for you.
Please see Issue getting Windows 8.1 on MBP Mid 2010 as an example.
hi, So basically i have used disk utility and formatted a drive (external) as MS DOS and now all i need to do is restart using the boot manager option i.e. boot up with the option key and select optical drive?
You cannot use an external disk for a Windows installation due to licensing restrictions. Only Windows Enterprise, which is not supported on Macs, allows external disk installations.
so if i partition the internal drive and format that for MS DOS FAT it should work by restarting and select boot from optical drive?
You will also need to create a Hybrid MBR using GPT Fdisk before you can boot. Windows requires 4-5 reboots, that are also required to be done manually.
ok many thanks, I shall read further about GPT Fdisk. Incidently how do I check that the w8 version i have is 64bit?
If you mount the ISO or DVD, what is the volume name that you see? You can also check autorun file in the root of the Installation media.
