Synching ipod increments number of plays

I like to keep track of the number of plays on my iPod and in iTunes. In the past I had an iPod classic, which did this very well. Now I have an iPod touch and the incrementing doesn't work at all. In essence, iTunes increments the number of plays every time the iPod synchs. For example, I plug the iPod into my computer and it immediately synchs. So song X shows 1 play. Then I do a little manipulation of my Top Rated list, move a few songs around, perhaps purchase a tune or two, get everything the way I want it, and before disconnecting, I synch again. Now song X shows 2 plays. I didn't play it again but it incremented anyway. If I synch again, song X will show 4 plays. It's crazy and totally inaccurate. The Classic didn't do this. Is there a way to fix it? Thanks.
