what is the screenshot format file on iOS and Android phones

what is the screenshot file format type on iOS and Android phones. how these phones store a screenshot as PNG, JPG or JPEG?

My LG tablet running Android 4.4.2 saves screenshots as png.


OSX (and probably iOS) also uses png on newer versions. Old OSX versions, if I recall correctly, defaulted to tiff instead.


I would expect screenshots to be saved in a non-lossy compression format, to ensure that the image remains pixel accurate. Typical formats for this would be png, tiff and bmp.


Note: jpg and jpeg are the same file format. I would assume that the .jpg variant originated with MS DOS as a workaround to support its rather limited file name length (8 letter file name + 3 letter extension vs MacOS 1-9 that supported 32 letter file names).
