I don't know if this is native to CarPlay itself or my alpine ILX-007 unit. I'm not getting any kind of audible notification for text messages. At first I thought it was because of my Apple Watch, since notifications are forwarded to it and tap my wrist. But no. I turned off my watch as a test. Nothing. Unless I go back to the home screen and see there's a badge, I don't know when a message comes in. Any ideas?
P.S. No CarPlay community proper?
I'm only a few years late on this reply lol but I had the same issue and just fixed it by going to settings- notifications- scroll down to messages and click on the show notifications in CarPlay đź‘Ť-1F3FF;
I have noticed the same thing, am just now playing around with carplay on my 2016 Honda Accord. I think I can only see the notifications from the home screen, but if I am playing music or something I have no idea I get a message. Does that sound like what happens for you?
Actually the problem seems to have resolved with iOS 9.
OK. I'm confused. I have 9.2.1 and I have NO text message notification sounds. I have 2016 VW and would appreciate any help. I feel like an idiot seeing as how few people are complaining about this so I must be missing something obvious. I love how Siri will read my messages but what good is that if I don't know I have a message?!

Turning the phone off silent worked for me.
Make sure your text message banners are on. That's what I had to do to fix mine.
You need to turn your side mute off or turn off mute in controls
