If it’s credit in the online Apple Store, it can only be used for items in that store.

Depends on what you mean by Credit on your Apple ID.
There are 2 types of Credit you can have.
Itunes Credit, and Apple Store Gift Card credit.
iTunes credit can only be used to buy things from the iTunes, App, iBooks, and Newsstand stores.
Apple Store Credit can only be used to buy things from the Apple Store. Either online, or through the Apple Store App.
